The substance of my abstract imagery is often based upon a sense of history, familiarity and shadows. The implied scale is ambiguous – microscopic or viewed from space?

The current works include wall reliefs made with routed wood, jig sawn Perspex and mixed media additions. The components of these pieces are inked up and hand printed onto large sheets of paper making monoprints that relate to the construction of the wall piece.

My use of materials involves the juxtaposition of varied textures, manipulation of the surface by scoring and routing and by painting and printmaking techniques.

I enjoy the fact that the beginning of the making of the piece may still be apparent, though veiled, at the conclusion of its construction.

Michael Ward 2009

Since the late seventies Michael Ward has been painting and printmaking.
His involvement in all aspects of printmaking has lead to an Arts Council award for print research, international exhibitions and collaborations with prominent international artists.

From an early experience of scenic painting for Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Michael has continued to make paintings and constructions from his London studio whilst setting up an Etching and Lithography studio in Athens; making large scale works in Berlin and promoting new print making techniques in New York and Istanbul.
