Patron saint of England, St George is also invoked against skin diseases. Legend holds that St. George killed a dragon, the probable misinterpretation by crusaders of the destruction of the devil. However the dragon was in some societies regarded as a symbol of lust or guardians of the portals of esoteric knowledge. Thus the tale is open to various interpretations. |
