St. Wilgefortis was an early Christian whose father, the pagan king of Portugal, wanted her to marry the king of Sicily, also a pagan. She had taken a vow of virginity. She prayed to become unattractive, whereupon she grew a beard. The suitor withdrew and her father crucified her.
She is depicted with St. Wulfstan who took the Bible too literally when it spoke of being clean of face. He ambushed bearded men and chopped off their beards. |
