Reg Gadneys paintings have been exhibited in group shows during the Aldeburgh, Cambridge and Kings Lynn Festivals and have been shown privately at the Adam Street Gallery. His work is represented in several Oxford and Cambridge college collections and other private collections in the United Kingdom and United States. The author of several books, he also taught at the Royal College of Art for fifteen years. The present exhibition is his first London one-man show. He lives in London and Greece.
The paintings in the exhibition are of female or androgynous figures confronting the Sphinx near the Great Pyramid at Giza, outside Cairo in Egypt. The Great Sphinx of Giza, on the west bank of The Nile faces due east, with a small temple between its paws. Its face may be that of the pharaoh Khafre, frequently known by the Hellenised version of his name, Chephren, which would date its construction to the Fourth Dynasty. Constructed mostly of porous limestone, the Sphinx is 240 feet long, 20 feet wide and about 66 feet high. Its Arabic name translates as Father of Terror. The origin and purpose of the Sphinx remain an enigma.
Reg Gadneys paintings were completed during 2003 and 2004.
